WATCH: TODAY Show Calls Attention to Sexual Assault on College Campuses
According to a report funded by the Department of Justice, roughly one in five women who attend college will become the victim of a rape or an attempted rape by the time she graduates. However, school policies and official data from colleges and universities does not reflect the scope of the problem, and student survivors are often pressured to remain silent and left feeling victimized a second time, according to a 12-month investigation by the Center for Public Integrity. On Thursday May 19, TODAY Show highlighted this issue, interviewing Maggie Hurt, a student at Wake Forest University, and Margo Jondo, a student at Indiana University, both survivors of sexual assault on their campuses and victims of inadequate response by their universities.
Take Action: In December 2010, V-Day and SAFER (Students Active for Ending Rape) launched the Campus Accountability Project (CAP) to create a student-led movement to reform sexual assault policies on campuses. A multi-phase project, CAP's online database houses over 130 policies (and growing) in a public and searchable catalog detailing what colleges and universities are doing to prevent, reduce, and respond to sexual violence on campus.
