READ: V-Man Mark Matousek Releases New Book Ethical Wisdom: What Makes Us Good
On May 24th, Random House released Ethical Wisdom: What Makes Us Good, an enlightening and thought provoking new book by V-Day activist and V-Men Column curator Mark Matousek. A V-Man through and through, Mark has been involved with the V-Day movement since the beginning, and has beautifully woven his experience as a V-Man into his work as an author:
Writing this book was a revelation for me. Since starting my work with V-Men, I've asked myself: How is it possible for some men to behave like animals? Are these violent tendencies hard-wired in us? Why don't women rape? How can we end this outrageous abuse? Having grown up in a house full of raped women, I needed to find some answers, and what I discovered truly surprised me. Contrary to being "born bad," we are actually endowed with a "moral organ" in our brain (like the wiring that helps us learn math and language), scientists now understand. Learning to use this hard-wired organ can change our lives completely! Learning to cultivate our innate goodness can profoundly affect the movement to end violence against women and girls. Knowing this has given me heart and made me far more optimistic about human nature ...and the work we are doing with V-Men.

NEW V-Men Column: Motivation by Mike Domitrz
As part of V-Day's on-going V-Men Column, Mike Domitrz, Founder and Executive Director of The Date Safe Project shares with us his story of how the sexual assault of his sister inspired him to "make a difference" in the lives of survivors and their loved ones through theater, literature and international workshops and presentations:
One the second day of my sophomore year at Loyola University of Chicago, I returned from swim practice to find a note on the door to my room. It said, "CALL HOME. EMERGENCY."
I thought that somebody had died. I called home. My Mom answered and I asked, "What's wrong?" As I held the phone tightly to my ear, I could not believe what she was saying. My youngest sister had been raped. "This can't be happening" is all I kept saying to myself. Anger, rage, confusion, and a rush of emotions overtook me. Violence against women had abruptly altered my life.

TAKE ACTION: Sign Petition to Demand Freedom from Sexual Assault and Harassment!
Feminists from all over the world are coming together to demand freedom from sexual assault and harassment through an online statement and petition to unite people in support of the alleged rape survivor of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, former director of the International Monetary Fund.
We encourage you all to read the statement and join Eve in signing the petition!
Rape is always about power and domination; it is sexualized violence.
Rape and sexual harassment of women are pervasive at all strata of society and in all corners of the globe. Women will never be fully free and able to enjoy equality with men until this ends. As feminists, we see the arrest of former International Monetary Fund director Dominique Strauss-Kahn on sexual assault charges as an opportunity to increase public awareness and as a wake-up call to renew action against sexual violence, not only in the US where his arrest occurred and in France, where media and many public figures are portraying him as the victim, but around the world.
