Rise 4 Justice in Afghanistan: Malalai Joya & Eve Issue Joint Statement

On 14 February 2014, V-Day, along with women, men, and youth around the world will RISE FOR JUSTICE, focusing the worlds attention on the issue of justice for all survivors of gender violence, and ending the rampant impunity that prevails globally. As we move towards 14 February, we are reminded daily of this impunity and the need to escalate our efforts and harness our collective power and imagination.

Today, Afghan activist Malalai Joya and V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler are RISING FOR JUSTICE for Shakila, a 16-year-old Afghan girl who, on 22 January 2012 was raped and murdered by Wahidi Behishti, a warlord member of the provincial council of Bamian province in Afghanistan.

Malalai and Eve Ensler have released a joint statement calling for the prosecution of Wahidi Behishti for this crime to the full extent of Afghan law, and for the international media, human rights organizations, and global citizens to "no longer standby and allow these crimes to take place with complete impunity" and to "tell and investigate Shakila's story."
